What are colored diamonds?
White or colorless diamonds are rated the highest. But, there is no denial to it that fancy colored diamonds have always been a choice of the powerful and the wealthy since ages. These colored diamonds have been a symbol of power and money. Colored diamonds are nothing but those allotrope of carbon that undergo some or the other deformation due to presence of some impurity, while in it's nascent stage of formation. The defect in their lattice structure also changes their color. These are also known as fancy diamonds. They are available in several colours ranging from pinks, blues, purples, reds, yellows, pinks, etc.
However, the physical conditions that are required for the formation of fancy diamonds are very rare. This can be understood by the fact that of every 10,000 colorless diamonds, we have one natural color fancy diamond. Apart from all the physical and chemical processes that carbon atoms undergo deep within the heart of the earth, some extra elements or impurities are also needed to interact with the carbon atoms during diamond formation, to interfere with the process and change the color of the diamond.
Who colors the diamonds?
The brown diamonds range in shades, from champagne to cognac. The mines in Australia, Africa and Serbia produce brown diamonds.
A diamond is brilliant and plays with light to trap it and make it shine.
With black diamonds, the sight is astonishing and amazing. Black diamonds absorb light almost completely.
Blues and diamonds, together, are both rare as a combination. The Cullian mine, near Pretoria, is the world's only blue diamond producing mine.
Green diamonds are rare. They are colored green due to exposure to irradiated particles, during formation. However, yellowish green or green yellows are also popular. The green color in diamonds is imparted to the diamonds when the crystal, during it's stage of formation, comes in prolonged contact with some radioactive alpha particles. These alpha particles are present in the magma or kimberlite in sme minute amount. The green coating formed over the crystal but by polishing the stone on a scaife, the colour can be removed. Green diamonds may vary in shades due to change in the lattice structure of the crystal. By heating the stone below 600 degree celsius, the green colour may be improved and enhanced.
Grey is a blend of a little balck with some greater amount of white.
Grey diamonds are rare and expensive. they offer a wonderous range of modifing color combinations.
Olive diamonds, not to confuse it with green, are rare and beautiful.
They are rare too. Priced high for their color and rarity, the daimonds are one of the most sought after. Brown and yellow tints in this orange are still available options.
Natural fancy pink diamonds are completely natural. The pink colored diamond is formed by a process known as Plastic Deformation. The diamond that is in it's semi-solid state gets some natural deformation, and it results to the pink appearance n the diamonds. Most of these diamonds, almost 90 percent, come from the Argyle mine in northwestern Australia. Reds, Purples, oranges are the secondary hues that are found in pink fancy natural diamonds. A natural fancy pink diamond is more durable and harder than a pink sapphire. The great demand of darker tones of pink and louder shades have made the dealers sell enhanced or treated pink diamonds. But, still natural diamonds are more expensive when compared to treated ones. A natural colored diamond will have more clarity when compared to a treated one. But, the intensity of the pink colour as well as the purity is more in an enhanced or treated pink diamond. A natural and untreated and un-enhanced natural pink diamond is made of the order SI-I clarity and comforms to the GIA( The Gemologial Institute of America) standards. A pink diamond can be cut into any shape ith the princess cut as well as the round brilliant cut is the most popular. Heart shape as well as the pear shape is no new.
The purple color in diamonds is correlated to internal grain formation making the cut important to the formation of color.
The color is in great demand yet rare. The rarity and popularity causes for the high price tag associated with it.
Red Diamonds are the rarest. It's hard to find or see one.
The Red Shield is one of the world's largest diamond but weighs only 5.11 carat. This is the smallest count for any other colored diamond's largest piece.
The more common yet the evergreem heartthrob of millions, the white diamonds are reffered to the colourless diamonds. The inherent color is true milk white whereas, the apparent color, due to the interplay of light, becomes transparent white. Pure white color, with no traces of colors are rare and the most expensives.
Of the 100 largest diamonds of the world, we have 30 that are yellow. Kimberley Octrahedron diamond is the largest one in this world. These yellow dimaonds may often be termed as canaries or cape series. The diamond gets it's yellow colour due to nitrogen components that get captured while the crystal is being formed. However, a faint yellow tint is common but the deep yellow canary is a rare occurance.
