Masaba Gupta brought a delicious mix of modern Indian fashion and old-world opulence to Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Diwali reception at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Wearing a custom House of Masaba creation, the designer gave Bengal’s traditional Lal Paar saree a contemporary makeover, with a little help from Sabyasachi’s unmistakable accessories.

The ivory ensemble features a structured, strapless Kora cotton corset paired with a fluid satin-organza drape. Deep burgundy borders cut through the ivory fabric, creating a striking contrast, while intricate paan motifs, ornamental tassel appliqué and delicate rhinestone embroidery add layers of heritage-inspired detail. The embroidered paan motif on the back brings another beautiful touch of craftsmanship to the drape.

The styling is where things get particularly interesting. Masaba adds a dramatic burgundy velvet jacket with a sculptural high collar, voluminous sleeves and an ornate gold emblem. A matching deep wine-coloured Sabyasachi clutch, decorated with a gold animal motif, brings another dose of maximalist glamour.

Her jewellery deserves its own moment. The colourful Trinket Hoarder neckpiece from House of Masaba x Amrapali Jewels features 18-karat gold with an antique finish, diamonds and an extravagant mix of colourful gemstones. Floral gold earrings, narrow black sunglasses and a sleek, centre-parted bun complete the look.

The result is a striking meeting of two design sensibilities: Masaba’s playful, contemporary approach to Indian dressing and Sabyasachi’s love for rich colours, heirloom-inspired accessories and unapologetic ornamentation. Traditional at heart, but far from predictable, this is festive dressing with plenty of personality.
