Who says Diwali dressing has to be all sarees, lehengas and traditional silhouettes? Sanya Malhotra certainly doesn’t think so!
The actress brought a refreshing dose of experimental glamour to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Diwali celebration in Los Angeles, stepping out in a striking black and gold creation by House of Masaba.
With its ornate embroidery, daring proportions and dramatic floor-length layering, the ensemble was anything but conventional. And that’s precisely what made it interesting.
A Little Black and Gold, a Lot of Drama

Sanya’s outfit featured an intricately embroidered black bralette paired with a matching high-waisted mini skirt. Both pieces were richly decorated with antique gold threadwork, featuring swirling floral patterns and elaborate ornamental motifs.

The fitted bralette had a deep neckline and structured cups, while the short skirt introduced a playful, contemporary element to the otherwise traditional craftsmanship.
But the real showstopper was the magnificent floor-length jacket.
Designed with wide sleeves, alternating black and muted gold stripes, and richly embroidered borders, the open-front layer brought a sense of grandeur to the look. Large botanical motifs, including striking pineapple-like designs, decorated the lower panels, while black velvet trims added depth and contrast.
The juxtaposition was fascinating. A barely-there two-piece outfit underneath, an almost regal embroidered robe on top. The combination felt theatrical, confident and distinctly Masaba.
Traditional Jewellery Meets Modern Styling

Celebrity stylist Manisha Melwani brought the ensemble together with carefully selected accessories.
Sanya wore a delicate gold maang tikka from Amama Jewels, paired with elaborate dangling earrings by House of Doro. The traditional jewellery created a lovely contrast against the unconventional outfit.

Her accessories also included a sculptural gold-toned bag by Amama Jewels and metallic strappy heels by Aquazzura. An anklet from Avsa Jewels added another subtle traditional detail.

For beauty, Sanya kept things beautifully polished. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, allowing the maang tikka and statement earrings to stand out.
Defined winged eyeliner, softly flushed cheeks and a muted rose lip completed the look without competing with the intricate embroidery.
From Masaba’s Couture Runway to a Diwali Celebration
Interestingly, this House of Masaba creation has already had another fashion moment.

Stylist Manisha Melwani revealed that she had the opportunity to interpret the design twice, first for Masaba’s couture show and then for Sanya’s Diwali appearance in Los Angeles.
That versatility is perhaps the most compelling aspect of the ensemble. The ornate embroidery and dramatic outer layer have the presence of couture, while the bralette and mini skirt bring a youthful, party-ready energy.
Sanya’s interpretation also shows how traditional Indian craftsmanship can move beyond familiar festive silhouettes without losing its identity.
And while the outfit might not be everyone’s idea of Diwali dressing, there’s no denying its visual impact.
Bold, beautifully detailed and full of personality, this was festive fashion with a very fashionable rebellious streak.
