Suneet Varma’s Soulful Collection at Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2013

Fashion designer Suneet Varma presented his new ethnic collection in a unique way as part of the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2013 in Mumbai, India on November 23, 2013.

He is said to have derived inspiration from poetry written by his mother, Indira Varma. And since he is adept at translating ideas to the ramp, the collection too had a poetic undercurrent. Adding to the mood was a recitation of poems as the models walked down the ramp. Indira herself recited some poetry as did Zehra Nigah, Radhika Chopra and Farookh Sheikh.

Suneet’s collection was unabashedly traditional, deriving from multiple folk cultures throughout the country. There was an old school feel to all the ensembles on the runway, transporting the audience back in time.

The ramp saw lehenga cholis, layered lehengas, sheer saris, salwar kameezes in all their styles, anarkali outfits and kurta lehengas. There was no one theme running through the lot – apart from poetry. The collection featured every type and style from decades ago to more contemporary fashions and silhouettes.

He relied on embroidery in silver and gold to add some dazzle and shine to the looks as well as unconventional jewellery designs. All the models wore lippies in shades of deep pink and red, and their hair was done up in slick styles.

Overall, Suneet’s collection was bursting with color and celebrating Indian women through the ages. Even though he took a modern take on a handful of the designs, the majority of them were very traditional indeed, evocative of a better time.
