Hairstyle DIY: Cheryl Cole’s Fishtail Plait with a Twist
1. Volume is an intricate part of this hairstyle, so you have to start by voluminizing the hair. You can do it in two ways – either by using Velcro rollers or a good voluminous hairspray that gives lift and body to the hair. To get volume using Velcro rollers, take the entire section of hair from the front to the middle of your scalp. Divide it into three sections from front to back. Take each section, and put the Velcro roller right underneath the section of the hair above the scalp, and roll the rest of the hair around the roller. The Velcro roller will hold itself in place once you adjust it well on the hair, by moving it side to side after rolling. Do this step with all the three sections of hair. Use a dryer on the entire rolled section, till all the Velcro rollers feel heated. Remove them – you will see that the hair looks well voluminized. Hold the volume in place by spritzing a good hair spray from a distance of about one hand away.

2. The next step is to get started on the twisted fishtail plait. Back brush your hair and gather the front voluminized section together at the top back of your head. (See photo to know where exactly to gather the hair) Secure it in place with a hair elastic to make a dainty ponytail. Now leave this part as it is. Take a strand of hair from the right side of the ponytail (without touching any of the hair actually secured in the ponytail) and place it, crossing over the ponytail, onto the left side of it. Next take a strand of hair on the left side of the ponytail and place it on the right side of it – but this time instead of placing it over the ponytail – place it under.

After this, you are again going to take a strand from the left side and a strand from the right side and place them together and make a roll. Secure the roll in place with a hair pin used from below the hair – so that it can’t be seen. Now take all the hair at the nape of your neck and secure in place with a hair ribbon. Make a normal fishtail plait from here – by dividing the hair into two sections and placing the outer strand from the left section on the inner side of the left section, and the outer strand of the right section on the inner side of the right section. Keep on doing these 2 steps this till you reach near the end of your hair – where you tie it with another hair ribbon. Now pull out chunks of hair from the left side of this fishtail plait to give it a loose, carefree appearance. And, you are done!
