One of the most influential figures behind American fashion has abruptly stepped away from the organisation he helped shape for two decades.
Steven Kolb has resigned as President and CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, just days after a confrontation with PETA protesters at a New York Fashion Week show went viral online. His departure ends a 20 year association with the CFDA, including 15 years as its chief executive.
What Happened at New York Fashion Week
The controversy began on September 13 during a COS runway show in New York, when several PETA activists interrupted the presentation to protest the use of wool in fashion.
Video from the event showed protesters attempting to enter the runway while holding signs. Kolb, who was seated in the audience, intervened physically rather than leaving the situation to security.
Footage showed him restraining protesters, including holding one person down and covering her mouth. The images spread quickly across social media and fashion media, turning what began as a runway disruption into a much larger conversation about how the head of American fashion’s leading trade organisation had responded.
Kolb later acknowledged that he should not have become physically involved.
He apologised, said security should have handled the incident, and announced that he would step away from his duties while the CFDA reviewed what happened. The organisation subsequently confirmed that he was on leave pending a full review.
A Resignation Days Later
By September 18, Kolb had decided not to return. In announcing his resignation, he reflected on leaving the CFDA after 20 years and expressed pride in what the organisation had achieved during his tenure. The CFDA responded by thanking him for his leadership and describing him as a longtime champion of American fashion.
The timing makes his exit particularly striking. Only days earlier, Kolb had been front and centre during New York Fashion Week, appearing at CFDA events and speaking publicly about the future of American fashion. His resignation now closes that chapter with unusual speed.
Twenty Years at the Centre of American Fashion
Kolb’s importance to the CFDA goes far beyond his title.
During his tenure, the organisation became an increasingly visible force behind New York Fashion Week, designer support programmes, scholarships, industry advocacy and the annual CFDA Fashion Awards.
He also worked closely with generations of American designers while helping the organisation navigate a fashion industry transformed by social media, direct to consumer retail, changing fashion calendars and global competition.
That long record is why the way his tenure has ended feels so sudden.
