Prada opened the Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear season in Milan on September 22, setting the tone for fashion week with a collection built around one deceptively simple idea: the skirt as object. Prada was one of the major opening-day shows on the official Milan Fashion Week schedule.
For Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, the skirt became less of a basic wardrobe piece and more of a design study. The collection moved through pleated, panelled, structured, short and mini silhouettes, showing how much one familiar garment can change through proportion, construction and styling.
One Skirt, Many Attitudes
The strength of the collection came from variation.
Pleated skirts had a sharper, almost uniform-like precision, while panelled and structured versions felt more architectural. Shorter minis brought a more direct, youthful energy.
But the skirt never existed in isolation.
Prada paired sharp tailoring with lace bralettes and bandeau tops, creating a deliberate tension between structure and exposed skin. Elsewhere, the same silhouettes were layered with blazers, fitted turtlenecks and dark trench coats, making the collection swing between sensual and severe.
That contradiction felt very Prada.
Colour Keeps the Collection Moving
The palette was richer than straightforward minimalism.
Reds, black, green, brown and pastel pink moved across the runway, creating combinations that could feel serious one moment and unexpectedly soft the next.
The darker tones gave the collection weight, particularly through outerwear, while pastel pink disrupted that seriousness with something lighter and almost naïve. Red added a sharper punctuation, preventing the clothes from becoming too restrained.
Bags Add Another Layer of Structure
The handbags played an important supporting role.
Across the runway, Prada used structured handbags and compact carryalls to reinforce the precision of the clothes. Some were carried tightly against the body, almost like functional objects rather than decorative accessories, which worked well with the collection’s broader interest in reducing familiar wardrobe pieces to their essential form.
That practicality also gave the looks a slightly intellectual edge. The bags did not compete with the skirts; they completed the geometry of the outfit.
Sunglasses Sharpen the Mood
Eyewear added another layer of character.
Several looks were finished with oversized, strongly framed sunglasses, giving otherwise simple combinations a cooler and more severe attitude.
On a runway already built around contrast, the glasses helped push some looks toward something more controlled and almost anonymous. They also worked particularly well against the softer lace bralettes and pastel tones, introducing a harder visual note.
Familiar Clothes, Made Unfamiliar
That is really what Prada SS27 did best.
Nothing here was completely alien: skirts, trench coats, bandeaus, blazers, handbags and sunglasses are all wardrobe staples.
But Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons kept changing the relationship between them.
A mini skirt could feel strict with a turtleneck, sensual with lace, or almost utilitarian under a dark trench. A structured bag could turn a soft look sharper. A pair of sunglasses could completely change the attitude.
For Spring/Summer 2027, Prada did not reinvent the wardrobe.
It made us look at familiar pieces differently.
