Dresses for women:

Guide

Silhouette refers to the overall cut and shape i.e. the basic foundation of a dress or a gown. It sets the entire mood of a garment. It represents the appeal of the garment and how the garment will drape on the body. For instance, A-line or sheath dresses will offer different appeal than a bell shaped full skirted ball gown.

We have discussed below a few dress types and the different silhouette offered by them.
These different silhouettes are created by incorporating different waist-lines and different styles of bodice, necklines and skirts. Ruffles, strings, pleats, runches, volumes of fabrics, etc are all used as an instrument to offer different feel, look, drape and silhouette to garments.

"Dress categories" and "styling tips" for different body types:

  • Empire dress

A-Line Dress

Silhouette

A-Line dresses were introduced by a French designer, Christian Dior, for his Spring-Summer,1955 Collection.

An A-line cut is narrower at the top and widely flared towards the bottom.  The style incorporates fit and flare to give the garment a slender, inverted funnel-like shape. The shape resembles the letter 'A' in it's shape, which the how the silhouette got its name.

The bodice is form-fitting and the bottom is wider.

Lines of skirt are straight, clean and ungathered and mostly incorporated in skirt pattern.

A-line dresses mostly feature an empire waist-line and are designed mostly for larger women.

This style of dress can feature a variety of different features such as halter, strapless or even long sleeves.

A number of versions, styles and forms of A-line garments are available around the basics that they flare just below your waist and are softly shaped at the waist.

Some garments may have a slim A-line while others may have a wider and a fuller A-line. The princess cut may exhibit vertical lines running from chest to hem. The circle skirt may feature a very wide A-line and a fuller skirt. Some skirts are A-lined with a narrow waistband, pleats or none of these. In others, the design you may find skimming of hips and widening of bottom and seaming at the waist.

You can wear them at formal events, such as weddings, evening parties, etc. You can also wear them to your casual outings.

Fabrics

Almost any fabric can be used to make an A-line garment. Remember that heavier fabrics will drape differently. You can wear them to more formal places. Lightweight materials like cotton, silk, and synthetics drape more freely. You can wear them to your evening parties.

A-Line Dress for:

Pear Shaped Body

Women with pear shaped body have broader hips and narrower shoulders and smaller torso. They may appear more in proportion as the dress silhouette may accentuate the upper half and camouflage the lower half.

The drop shoulder cut may make your shoulders appear broader.

Pair your A-line skirt with a darker color top. This will draw attention away from upper half of your body.

Avoid wearing pencil skirts that may accentuate your curves.

Bottoms in dark and solid colors may also slim down your bottom half.

Accessories:

For pear shaped body, long necklaces like the Opera necklace and the Rope necklace with big bold pendants and large earrings may draw attention towards the top, make you appear taller and fill in some volume also.

Wear waist belt to narrow down and highlight your waist. Don't wear thick belts as they may cut you into two halves, virtually.

Wear accessories to your size. Remember small, delicate pieces of jewelery may make you appear huger. Wear huge and thick thicker jewelry and bold big handbags.

Petite Women

A-line dresses are very flattering on Petite women. Petite women may look taller in an A-line dress as it may give the torso an elongated look.

Wear A-line dresses with length reaching not more than an inch or two below your knees. Ankle- long dresses with an A-line may not appear flattering on you. A long hemline can make you appear shorter as you may break the smooth vertical line. You may wear wider flared A-line bottoms.

The fitted bodice may draw more attention to your busts. If you have small bossoms, use some extra padding to appear in proportion.

A broad V-neckline may help you draw attention towards the upper frame of your body and add vertical length to your body.

Wear spaghetti straps or shoulder-less dresses to flaunt those toned arms.

A-line dresses that feature front wraps may add more inches to your vertical body frame.

Wear small prints as bolder ones may overwhelm you. Wear vertical stripes, prints etc to make you appear taller.

Pair your A-line dresses with a Cami or a jacket to your workplace.

Accessories:

Wear long necklaces such as the Opera necklace or the Rope necklace that may give you an elongated vertical look. Wear big, slender and long earrings to add length to your body.

Apple Body Type

Women with Apple body shape have a bigger bossom, narrow hips and broader shoulder. You may choose dresses that feature V-neckline and an A line skirt.  For your wider shoulders, wear embellished skirts with prints or sequins to draw attention away from your problem area.

Do not wear too long or too short A-line dresses. Keep the length an inch or two above the knees. However, the dressier ones can have hemlines stopping just above the ankles. Mini skirts, knee length and long hemlines done in A-line will look great on you.

Wear your size: nothing too baggy or too tight. Something larger than you will make you appear larger.

Wear A-line gowns or A-line skirts with halter neckline or V-neckline.

Off-shoulder A-line evening dresses are not meant for you. They may make your shoulders appear broader than they are.

Wear solid dark colors like Black, brown or navy blue. You may also dress mono-chromatically with dark colors. Mix and match colors. Use darker colors to camouflage the problem areas. Do not wear colors in great contrast.

Wear printed A-line dresses for a leaner look. Go for big patterns as small prints can make you look bigger. Strong vertical details, embellishments, prints and patterns like pinstripes, zippers, vertical paisley prints, cable patterns, pleats and vertical stripes may make you appear taller and sleeker.

Heavier fabrics in this style will look flattering on the full figured women as they don't cling. Remember that if a dress is clinging too much to your curves, the fabric is simply not going to work for your figure. Cottons seems to always look best on plus size shapes. Spandex will also work. Keep the knitted ones for winters.

Empire-Line Dress

Silhouette

It was very popular in the 1960's by Princess Grace Kelly and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy

A dress with empire-waistline features a waistline that rises higher than the natural waist,  just below your bust-line. The waistline paves way to a skirt that may may be slightly flared. The empire-style dress has a high waistline under the bust with a narrower skirt. The skirt-style can flow freely or be a bit more fitted. An empire waist style is usually paired with a square neckline, wide straps or sleeves.

Both Greeks and Romans wore gowns with empire waist.

A lot of maternity clothing is designed with an empire waist. The waistline below the bust may feel more comfortable and natural to pregnant ladies. The freely draping fabric, over the stomach, may allow a woman's growing belly expand without discomfort. Maternity clothing often feature tie-backs, so that the garment can be loosened as a woman grows larger.

Empire-Line Dress for:

Petite Women

They look the best on slender or petite figure.

The empire dress creates an illusion of length, enhance the minimal curves, and create an illusion of a fuller body.

Best for those who are slender on top i.e. the pear shaped petite ones. The clothing may help maximize the bust, as slender women tend to have smaller busts. The style may be flattering for those brides with a smaller bust since it draws attention to the neckline.

A ribbon, some details, frill etc may be used to highlight the waist.

A shirt with an empire waist can be worn over slimming jeans or skirts, for women who want to highlight their legs. The garment can also be cut differently to emphasize the bust, with sleeves in varying lengths to expose or cover the arms, as desired.

This gown flatters very skinny girls and fits with retro party themes.

Plus-size Women

They may create an illusion of length and height by giving an elongating look to plus size women.

The style may help pear shaped women camouflage their bottom heavy figure or a thick waist. The style sweeps softly over the curves to get you closer to an hourglass figure.

Empire line is great for fuller figures because the design creates a smooth and straight silhouette to make them look slimmer and taller.

Since the waistline is located above the midsection, the dress can  help you camouflage the extra fat on your stomach and thighs.
