Some Bollywood reunions are worth the wait! Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan are coming together on screen after 19 years for a new film titled Long Years Ago, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ritesh Batra.
And there’s another interesting addition to the cast. French actress Mélanie Laurent, best known for her performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, will also play a leading role.
A Reunion That Brings Back Parineeta Memories
Saif and Vidya first shared the screen in Parineeta (2005), which marked Vidya’s Hindi film debut. Their chemistry was one of the film’s highlights, making them a memorable pairing.
The actors later appeared together in Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007). Now, nearly two decades later, audiences will get to see them reunite in a completely different story.
Vidya has expressed her excitement about collaborating with Saif again, describing the reunion as particularly special because of their Parineeta connection.
What Is Long Years Ago About?
Set in 1991, Long Years Ago is described as a comedy-drama exploring complicated family relationships, unspoken emotions and the consequences of leaving important conversations unfinished.
The story follows a family whose members have spent years avoiding difficult conversations, until circumstances force them to confront their feelings.
It’s an interesting premise for Ritesh Batra, whose critically acclaimed The Lunchbox beautifully explored loneliness, relationships and emotional connections through everyday moments.
With Batra’s sensitive storytelling and a cast known for nuanced performances, the film promises something more intimate than the usual Bollywood spectacle.
Mélanie Laurent Joins the Cast
The film also marks Mélanie Laurent’s Hindi cinema debut.
The French actress has appeared in internationally recognised films including Inglourious Basterds, Now You See Meand Enemy.
Her involvement brings an interesting international dimension to the project, particularly with a filmmaker like Batra, whose work has consistently appealed to audiences beyond India.
Filming Begins in Mumbai
Long Years Ago has already begun filming in Mumbai.
The project is being produced by Ritesh Batra and Adeel Ahmed under Poetic License, in collaboration with Jio Studios and Good Chaos.
While the makers have yet to announce a release date, the combination of Saif, Vidya, Mélanie and Batra certainly makes this one worth keeping an eye on.
And for everyone who still remembers the beautiful chemistry of Parineeta, seeing Saif and Vidya together again might just be the biggest attraction!
