King Charles Keeps Harry and Meghan Outside Royal Duties

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be back in Britain, but their return does not come with a return to royal duties.

King Charles has formally reaffirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the Royal Family and should be treated, in practical terms, as private citizens. The clarification was issued in a letter sent to senior government and military officials following the couple’s recent move back to the UK.

Their Royal Status Has Not Changed

Harry and Meghan stepped away from official royal life in 2020, and the King’s latest guidance makes clear that the arrangement still stands. They do not represent the monarch at public events, their charitable work is undertaken privately, and their commercial interests remain their own. Their HRH styles also remain unused.

That matters because the couple’s return to Britain had inevitably raised questions about whether a softer version of royal life might be possible this time around.

For now, the answer appears to be no.

The Timing Caught Harry and Meghan Off Guard

According to Reuters, Harry and Meghan were surprised by the timing of the letter and learned about it only shortly before it was distributed. The couple reportedly does not dispute the substance of the clarification, but the way it was communicated appears to have added another layer of tension.

The situation is especially sensitive because their move back to Britain already places them physically closer to a family relationship that has remained complicated for years.

A New UK Chapter, but on Their Own Terms

Harry, Meghan and their children recently returned to Britain after six years in the United States. They are expected to maintain a private home base in the UK while continuing their independent work, and they are also keeping their California residence.

Harry has already been seen working on an undisclosed project at a London production studio, a sign that his post-royal professional life is continuing rather than shifting back toward official palace duties.

Security Is Still the Big Question

One issue remains unresolved: security.

A committee is expected to review what level of publicly funded protection, if any, Harry and Meghan should receive now that they are living in Britain again. Harry has spent years challenging decisions around his security arrangements in the UK, so this remains one of the most important practical questions surrounding the move.
