Kim Kardashian is opening up about a new health scare, and this one carries an especially emotional connection to her late father, Robert Kardashian.
In the newly released trailer for The Kardashians Season 8, Kim reveals that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the esophagus. The teaser shows the 45 year old in hospital, with the diagnosis immediately prompting memories of her father, who died from esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59.
The Diagnosis Hits Close to Home
One of the most emotional moments in the trailer comes when someone off camera asks Kim whether her father died from a condition involving the same part of the body.
Kim confirms the connection, while another scene shows Kris Jenner visibly upset by the situation. The trailer does not reveal the severity of Kim’s condition or provide details about what treatment she has received, leaving the full story to unfold when the new season premieres.
For the Kardashian family, anything involving the esophagus understandably carries extra weight. Robert Kardashian was diagnosed with esophageal cancer shortly before his death in September 2003. His illness progressed rapidly, and his death had a lasting impact on Kim, Kourtney, Khloé and Rob Kardashian.
Esophagitis Is Not the Same as Esophageal Cancer
Despite the emotional connection made in the trailer, esophagitis and esophageal cancer are not the same condition.
Esophagitis refers to inflammation or irritation of the lining of the esophagus. It can be caused by several factors, including acid reflux, certain medications, infections or allergic reactions. Symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing and chest discomfort.
In some people, long term inflammation associated with certain conditions can lead to complications such as Barrett’s esophagus, which is linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. That does not mean an esophagitis diagnosis itself means someone has cancer.
That distinction is particularly important here, especially given the way Kim’s family history is presented in the trailer.
Robert Kardashian’s Legacy Includes Esophageal Health Awareness
The family has previously turned the pain surrounding Robert Kardashian’s illness into something more constructive.
In 2019, the Kardashian family helped establish the UCLA Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health, which focuses on research, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the esophagus. Kim has since spoken proudly about the work being done through the centre and its ability to help patients facing conditions her father once battled.
That history makes Kim’s latest health revelation feel more personal than a typical reality television storyline.
Another Vulnerable Chapter on The Kardashians
Kim has increasingly allowed health concerns to become part of the more vulnerable side of The Kardashians, rather than keeping the show focused only on business, relationships and celebrity life.
This latest diagnosis appears to be one of the more serious moments teased for Season 8, which is scheduled to premiere on Hulu on October 8, 2026.
For now, the trailer leaves viewers with more questions than answers. But given her father’s history, it is easy to understand why hearing the word “esophagus” in a medical setting would carry a very different emotional meaning for Kim and the rest of her family.
