Applique

Applique

Applique: is a French word meaning : “something that has been applied / to put on”.

In fashion and apparel, 'applique' is a sewing technique in which pieces of fabric, embroideries, laces etc are sewn onto another piece of fabric to create interesting design and patterns.

In the process the applied pieces have their sides folded inwards and are then attached by using straight stitch, satin stitch or button-hole stitch.

A pure applique work involves cutting interesting design and patterns and stitching it on another piece of cloth.

An extensive usage of this technique is seen in quilting.

List of some items on which applique work can be done:

  • Lampshades
  • Bedsheets
  • Pillow covers
  • Apparels
  • Wall hangings
  • Handbags
  • Folders
  • Envelopes
