Dresses for Women: Guide

October 27, 2009 by sarita

Maxi Dress for:

Petite Women

Do's:

A maxi dress may make you appear taller and more feminine.

Choose the one that fits you well or you may end up looking like a stump. A structured dress may accentuate your waist and make you appear more curvaceous and shapely.

Wear the right length. You may go for a full-length dress that sits close to your body.

Wear maxi-dresses that feature thin straps and a defined waist-line, like an empire waistline or an A-line.

Go for those in solid colors, especially black, olive green, purple or dark brown.

Smaller prints will suit and not the larger ones.

Wear large flares or pleats only when done in empire line.

V-neck or Scoop neckline maxi will make your shoulders and neck appear larger.

For some extra height, wear pumps, wedges or high-heeled sandals.

Don't s:

Wearing long hemlines without heels may make you appear shorter.

Avoid horizontal and large patterns that may overwhelm you.

Do not wear those with large volumes of fabrics and ruffles hanging down as your body frame might appear dis-proportionate.

Belts may ruin the smooth line of your dress, cut you, visually, into two and make you appear shorter.

Accessories:

Carry small handbags as the larger ones may overwhelm you.

Wear headscarf and not hairbands.

Wear small and delicate jewelries.

Wear narrow belts, if in case you need to wear one.

Plus-size Women

Do's:

Maxis may help you minimize large hips and legs.

Wear form fitting maxi-dresses. A loose one will make you appear boxy.

Maxis done in A-line are a great choice for your shape, especially for wedding gowns, since they don't cling at the wrong places.

Halter style or thicker straps will look flattering if you have a large bust area.

Wear large block prints.

A V-neckline will help you create a leaner vertical line and an empire waist-line may help you camouflage your fat tummy.

Wear neutral colors, like olive green, black, brown etc, to appear slimmer. Dark colors may help you camouflage your problem areas, like wider hips, heavy thighs, legs, etc.

A basic cardigan may help you against the cold.

Dont's:

Avoid wearing hemlines that are too long.

Thinner spaghetti straps are not meant for you.

Avoid wearing smaller prints, esp. floral.

Avoid wearing closed toe style footwear's.

Accessories:

Wear loose fitting maxi dresses with a belt carefully worn just below your bust or around the waist. This way you can create a maxi dress that looks fitted at the bodice and wider at the bottom.

Wear long necklaces like the opera to appear taller and leaner.

Scarves, and handbags may help you add to the look.

Pair with gladiators, sandals, strappy sandals, wedges, espadrilles or high-heels.
