Soft-cup bras provide shape, control and support within limits, and those limits are set by what a band alone can carry. They are most popular with women wearing A and B cup sizes, where the support requirement is within what the band can comfortably manage.

They are ideal at home, and anywhere the bra is not playing a major role in the silhouette of what you are wearing. For a fitted dress where shape matters, a structured cup does more.
