The Aamby Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2013 kicked off in New Delhi on July 23 with a presentation of ace designer JJ Valaya’s exquisite collection.

He roped in Bollywood actors Kangana Ranaut and Kabir Bedi to walk the ramp in his creations. While Kabir was more than happy and practically glided down the runway, beautiful Kangana admitted that she was very nervous but ended up looking like a dream doing the catwalk.

Kangana was dressed in a gold lehenga and a royal blue choli, embellished gold head gear giving her look a wholly exotic vibe.

Kabir, meanwhile, looked simply majestic! He sported a gold-embellished black kurta with a matching turban to boot. He was so enthusiastic in this avatar that you would have been forgiven for thinking he actually did come from royalty if you didn’t know who he was.

There couldn’t have been a better designer to kick-start the week with. Valaya being Valaya, he even did away with front-row seating altogether. Can you imagine how crestfallen the elite crowd must have been at that! His show was, instead, presented in the setting of a lounge.

The outfits were inspired by the Ottoman Empire, and yes, it is exactly, if not more, opulent than you or I could ever imagine. The precise detail, the sweeping embroidery with stones and zardozi, the royal but sophisticated fabrics and colors – everything blended into the mind-blowing works of art that Valaya is known for.

He said that he wanted this collection to be elegant, radiant and pure (in his words)but also something that every Indian bride can imagine herself in without being intimidated, as is the norm with high-end designer bridal wear.

We think he has done full justice to that vision with this show. And the thundering applause that broke out at the end when he came on stage to take a bow was evidence of that too.
